Hi Friends,
We’re diving into a topic that’s close to my heart and crucial for many families: time management tips for teens with ADHD and autism.
I received a heartfelt question from a mom with a 15-year-old daughter who’s being evaluated with autism and ADHD. With high school around the corner, they’re looking for resources to help her manage her time better, especially with the increased homework load.
Here are some practical tips that have worked wonders for my own daughter:
1. Tangible Time References: If your child has ADHD, chances are they struggle with “time blindness” which is defined as difficulty in gauging how long tasks take.
- Instead of saying “10 minutes,” try using relatable cues like “let’s get ready for school before this song ends” or “fold your laundry during this episode of a show.” This helps make abstract timeframes more tangible.
2. Checklists: Think of this like a daily rubric for your kids by giving them a visual reminder of tasks that need to be done.
- I had one in my girls’ bathroom and another on the fridge for morning and evening routines. This reduces constant nagging and promotes independence. You can customize a checklist for your daughter’s needs with this free download.
3. Routine, Repetition, Consistency: These are key, especially for kids with ASD or ADHD. Establishing a consistent routine helps them know what to expect and what’s expected of them.
4. School Support: If your child has an IEP or 504 plan, make sure to communicate your concerns with their school team. They can help integrate specific accommodations to manage her homework and prioritize tasks effectively.
And remember, grace and patience are essential. It can be frustrating, but your daughter’s brain works differently, and that’s okay. Finding strategies that work for her often involves trial and error.
