Ep 434: What to Do When You Feel Like You’re Drowning in To-Do Lists
LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST
Hi Friends,
Okay, tell me if this sounds familiar: You sit down to tackle your to-do list, and instead of feeling productive, you feel paralyzed. There’s just so much to do. So you add a few easy things to the list (make coffee, check emails, breathe) just so you can cross them off and feel like you accomplished something.
Yep. Been there.
If your to-do list feels less like a helpful tool and more like a never-ending guilt trip, we need to talk. Because here’s the thing—your to-do list should be working for you, not against you.
Step One: Let’s Get Real About the List
One of the biggest mistakes we make? Writing down vague, unrealistic, or just too many tasks. Organize the house? That’s not a to-do list item—that’s a lifetime goal. Instead, be specific. Declutter the junk drawer? That’s doable.
Also, can we all agree that a 47-item to-do list is just setting ourselves up for failure? Let’s start with the Top Three Rule—pick three priorities for the day. Anything extra? Bonus points.
Step Two: Time is a Finite Resource (Unfortunately)
We think we can do it all, but newsflash: we can’t. If your to-do list is packed from sunrise to midnight, you’re setting yourself up for burnout. Be honest about how much time things actually take and schedule accordingly. (Yes, running a “quick” errand always takes longer than you think.)
Step Three: Embrace Flexibility
Life happens. The WiFi goes down, the kids get sick, or you accidentally fall into a three-hour deep dive on how giraffes sleep (just me?). Instead of spiraling, build in buffer time and be willing to shift things around. Your to-do list isn’t set in stone—it’s a guide, not a prison sentence.
Step Four: Small Wins Matter
Crossing things off feels so good, right? So let’s set ourselves up for success. Instead of waiting until everything is done to feel accomplished, celebrate the small wins along the way. Progress is progress. And yes, checking “make coffee” totally counts.
Step Five: Stop Letting Your List Make You Feel Like Crap
A to-do list is just a tool. It’s not a measure of your worth or a scoreboard tracking your productivity. If you didn’t finish everything today? That’s fine. Shift it to tomorrow and move on.
Look, we’re all just doing the best we can. So if your to-do list is making you feel like you’re drowning, it’s time to rewrite the rules. Start small, be realistic, and for the love of all things organized—stop adding “make a to-do list” just so you can cross it off. 😉
